Rod Library at the University of Northern Iowa is trying to determine
how to count "volumes" in preparation for marking the addition of the
millionth volume to the collection. The instructions for the ACRL
Statistics Questionnaire indicate that a library should define a
volume according to the ANSI/NISO definition - "a single physical unit
of any printed, typewritten, handwritten, mimeographed, or processed
work, distinguished from other units by a separate binding,
encasement, portfolio, or other clear distinction, which has been
cataloged, classified, and made ready for use, and which is typically
the unit used to charge circulation transactions." The instructions
further indicate that duplicates, bound volumes of periodicals,
unclassified bound serials, and government document volumes accessible
through the library’s catalog(s) should be included in this count.

Has anyone used a different standard measure for this purpose? If so,
what?

Thank you.
