I can't speak for the other sections of the Best Books set, but I was
asked to do the GV section, and have spent many, many hours trying to
select the most appropriate titles and agonizing over having to
eliminate desirable ones due to space limitations. I think that, just
as in similar guides, the quality will vary depending on the passion
and knowledge of the selector.
