We have much discussion about this, for we are an undergraduate institution,
too. Clearly, it depends on what areas you
teach in.
The following are some mportant databases that I use frequently with our
students:
America: History and Life
Historical Abstracts
Bibliography of Native North Americans
PsycLit (and PsycArticles)
Sociofile
MLA International Bibliography
Anthropological Literature
Art Index
ATLA Religion Database (all religions of the world; not just Christianity);
ATLAS - a full-text subset of ATLA
EconLit
eHRAF (comes in two parts)
Geobase
ERIC and e-Subscribe; Education Index
Humanities Index
JSTOR
PAIS
International Political Science Abstracts
Sport Discus
L'Annee (pls add the accent) philologique (if you have a Classics Dept.)
Iter is an inexpensive database that covers the Middle Ages and the
Renaissance quite well. (Historical Abstracts does not.)
We used to have subscriptions to many of the H.W. Wilson indexes, but
we found that a large portion of that material is
also available in aggregator databases, such as ProQuest and (Ebsco)
Academic Search Elite (or Premier).
