CDL: (Response) Approval plans for small colleges

While I have never worked for a small library, I can speak to the issue
of
faculty review:  At the places I've worked that tried it, most faculty
reps
would not come review things even if they thought it was a good idea.
(There always seemed to be one researcher in each place that would, but
one
needs greater participation for a plan to be effective. )  If your books
stay on your review shelves for one week, that becomes too much of a
repeat
burden for them.  If you leave them on your review shelves for weeks to
give faculty a chance to look, that delays their accessibility by
students
and others.  Additionally, if you buy the books shelf ready,  returns
are
hard to effect.  The purpose of the review at that stage is to see what
comes in over time so that you can make appropriate changes to the plan,
rather than to send back lesser books.
