From: ALCTS/CMDS Comm. on Admin. of Collection Development
To: Academic and Public CD Colleagues,
Come participate in a critical discussion of staffing models in
collection development. Defend, criticize, and share the models you
know. The results of the discussion will be written up and will reveal
changes and trends in CD organization and staffing. Please join one
of the focus groups below. They are distinguished by how CD is
arranged in an library. Please read the text to see the differences
in the models/arrangements.
NB: To sign up, please see the directions at the bottom of this
message.
-----------------
Group 1. Functional CD Models.
Example: All selectors are located in a collection development
department with duties that are predominately collection
development-related. They may perform other functions, e.g.,
reference service, but only on a limited basis. In larger
libraries, selectors work in departments or teams organized
by disciplinary areas (humanities, social sciences, sciences, etc.).
Where/when: Sunday, January 25, 11:30-12:30 a.m.

----------------
Group 2. Hybrid CD Models:
Example: In the main library, collection development is
organized functionally, as above, but in the branches, collection
development is performed as one of many responsiblities by librarians
reporting to their in-house administrator. This arrangement exists
in both university and public systems.
Where/when: Monday, January 27, 9:00-10:00 a.m.

------------------
Group 3. Geographic CD Models:
Example: Collection development is performed in a unit where
librarians have various responsibilities, including collection
development. Theprimary feature that unites the group is the user
community they serve or the common geographic location where the librarians
are housed. Technical services for the collection are performed elsewhere
on campus. Librarians with CD assignments report to the head of the
separate library, not the system's Head of CD.

SIGN UP INFORMATION: For the sake of our research, we ask that
only one person from each library attend a focus group. If you would
like to come, please reply to me at:
