Greetings all,
My library is considering moving from a slip plan to a full-blown approval
plan. We are a smallish library serving a small, mostly undergraduate,
university - and, as far as I can tell, approval plans seem to be used
especially by large libraries with a more comprehensive research agendas and
more comprehensive budgets. Are there small-to-medium college libraries out
there that would be willing to share their experiences with approval plans?
Have they served as useful collection development tools?
Some concerns include managing the budget within this context, as well as
managing (maintaining or increasing) faculty input into the process,
especially in the initial, profile-development, stage. Do you have teaching
faculty review in-coming books, or do librarians take care of this? Are the
departments involved/interested in developing/revising the subject profiles?
Does the approval plan work to improve the collection?
Thanks for your help,
Carolyn Coates
