Irene Vaslef Fellowship in Librarianship, Summer 2003.

Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection is pleased to announce the
inauguration of the Irene Vaslef Fellowship in Librarianship, a competitive
program intended to serve librarians responsible for specialized collection
development in university or research libraries that do not support a
librarian's position dedicated solely to their discipline. The fellowship
will provide for a month's summer residence at Dumbarton Oaks for the purpose
of professional development for a librarian holding responsibility
for Byzantine Studies, Garden History and Landscape Studies, or Pre-Columbian
Studies.

This program is intended to strengthen library services in institutions that
cannot afford a full-time specialist in the areas of Dumbarton Oaks'
strengths, and to enhance our own library's research services in an
increasingly interconnected world. Applicants may be full time bibliographers
with collection assignments in multiple specializations, reference librarians
with additional responsibility for collection development, or bibliographers
who also have technical services responsibilities. Facility in written and
spoken English is required

The Fellowship is named for Irene Vaslef whose 30 years of dedicated service
in Byzantine Studies collection development helped shape the Dumbarton Oaks
Research Library. It offers a stipend of $215 per week during residence at
Dumbarton Oaks (July 7 - August 1, 2003), housing in the Fellows Building,
lunch on weekdays, Dumbarton Oaks' contribution to health insurance, and
travel expense reimbursement (not to exceed the lowest available airfare,
up to a maximum of $1,300) if other travel support cannot be obtained.

Application deadline is February 28, 2003. Applicants should submit the
following:

1- curriculum vitae.

2- letter of application describing a bibliographic project that uses the
resources found at Dumbarton Oaks and how such a project will specifically
benefit the applicant's home institution. Preference is given to proposals
of mutual benefit.

3- contact information for 3 references, one of whom must be the
applicant's current supervisor.

The selection committee will make its decision by March 15, 2003
and all applicants will be notified of the result.
