As an academic, public services librarian who is new to collecting for

Psychology, could you point me in the direction, net or print, to find core
collections in psychology and/or other helpful tools?

We are a small liberal arts university offering a B.A. in Psychology with a
choice of a Standard Curriculum or, as an alternative, choosing either a
concentration in the Psychology of Children and Youth or the concentration
in Psychology of Work.

All my best,

Susan

I believe that OCLC offers some assistance in this field. We found that
we couldn't afford the OCLC fees, however. We tried to establish a de
facto "core collection" by identifying approx. 6 sister universities that
were similar in ours, that presumably also offered undergraduate degrees in
...., and then looked at the recent 5 - 10 years of their collection in
areas or topics that were identified by our departments. Many OPACs have
a date limit on them (we chose institutions whose OPACs had this feature)
and with the help of a student assistant, we were able to establish
something like this, for collection evaluation purposes.

This methodology may have many flaws, but it was inexpensive and it placed
us in the context in which we wished to be placed.

Virtually all the materials offered by the American Psychological
Association's web site would be good choices. Random House offers a Social
Scieces catalog with lighter selections. Insight Media is good for videos.
Routledge and Sage are good publishers and try this web site:
