For the past two years, the number of nominees for ALA's various awards
has dwindled alarmingly. In the first year, we attributed it to the
aftermath of 9/11. Perhaps we are still somewhat stunned by that
occurrence, and haven't yet returned to normal routines. Whatever the
reason, for the second year in a row, the slowness with which
nominations has been received has resulted in the deadline for
nominations being extended.

This year, the deadline has been extended until January 3.

As the ALCTS representative to the Hugh C. Atkinson Memorial Award
Committee, I'm writing to this list to ask that you give
consideration to whom you might nominate to receive the Atkinson Award.

This award is awarded jointly by ACRL, ALCTS, LITA, and LAMA, in honor
of Hugh C. Atkinson. It is given to librarians who have contributed
significantly to improvements in the areas of library automation.
Library management, and/or library development and research.

A description of the award, and its criteria, a list of awardees, and
instructions for making nominations may be found at
http://www.ala.org/acrl/award2.html.

Please get in touch with your committees and boards and friends, and
urge them to recognize a deserving librarian by nominating that
librarian for this award.
