Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection
The General Libraries  The University of Texas at Austin

The Mexican American/Latino Studies Librarian is charged with the 
development and implementation of the Mexican American/Latino Studies 
Library Program of the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection.  The 
Librarian develops the library’s book, archival, media, and electronic 
collections in the areas of Mexican American/Latino Studies and U.S.-Mexico 
Border Studies.  Additional responsibilities include providing specialized 
reference, developing and promoting library use instruction and outreach 
programs and compiling bibliographies and other library aids to facilitate 
access.  The Librarian will serve as liaison between the library and the 
faculty and students of the University’s Center for Mexican American 
Studies and will maintain communication with the local and national Latino 
community and its organizations.  Other responsibilities include 
participating in decision and policy making and planning for the Collection 
and participating regularly at the Information desk.  The position reports 
to the Head Librarian, Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection.

The Mexican American Library Program (MALP) 
(http://www.lib.utexas.edu/benson/index.html) was formally established in 
1974 by the The University of Texas at Austin General Libraries to support 
the educational needs of students of Mexican American and U.S. Latino 
culture and history.  Housed in the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American 
Collection (BLAC), library materials acquired through the MALP relate to 
the history, politics, and culture of the diverse Latino populations in the 
United States with a special emphasis on the Mexican American experience in 
Texas. The Benson Latin American Collection is an internationally 
recognized research library of over 800,000 volumes of books, pamphlets, 
and serials as well as extensive archival and media collections in the 
areas of Latin American and Mexican American/Latino Studies. The Collection 
principally supports university teaching and research programs in these 
areas, but also serves a wide national and international scholarly 
clientele. The staff consists of 7 librarians, 15 FTE classified staff, and 
12 FTE student assistants.

Required Qualifications:  Master’s degree from ALA-accredited graduate 
program.  An additional graduate degree or extensive academic background or 
experience in Mexican American or Latino Studies.  Fluent in Spanish.  Two 
years library experience including reference and collection development 
responsibilities.  Experience with online database searching and working 
knowledge of Internet-based sources.

Preferred Qualifications:  Latin American Studies academic background or 
experience.  Experience with web page design.  Excellent communication 
(oral and written) and interpersonal skills.  Demonstrated ability to work 
well with diverse populations, to solve problems, to meet deadlines, and to 
work collegially in an evolving technical environment.  Demonstrated 
potential for leadership in university, state, and national programs and 
initiatives.

Salary and benefits:  Annual salary range is $36,000 -- $38,000 or more 
depending upon qualifications and experience.  No state or local income 
tax.  Standard state benefits package including paid vacation and sick 
leave, paid holidays, retirement plan options, and health insurance 
(comprehensive major medical and dental plans, vision, life, disability, 
etc…).  Deferred compensation and tax sheltered annuity programs also 
available.
