ACRL Media Resources Discussion Group Meeting
ALA Annual Conference
Sunday, June 16, 2002 9:30 - 11:00 a.m.
Sheraton, Savannah 3
Atlanta, GA

Another First!
The ACRL Media Resources Discussion Group will hold
its first "true" discussion session on Sunday, June
16, 2002, 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. at the Sheraton, Savannah
3.

This new ACRL Group will learn about and discuss two
topics for approximately 40 minutes each.

Mary S. Konkel, Head of Technical Services at College
of DuPage will present: "The Ten Commandments of Media
Resources Cataloging", a discussion focusing on some
of the basic tenets of cataloging media resources,
including videos, DVDs, kits, electronic resources,
and accompanying software in books. After a brief
presentation on the special problems and rules for
cataloging media resources, you will be invited to
participate in discussion on cataloging these
challenging materials.

Mary S. Konkel has been a practicing AV cataloger for
over 20 years and has held positions in Wisconsin,
Illinois and Ohio. Mary has been active in the
Online Audiovisual Catalogers, ACRL Media Resources
Committee, ALA Video Round Table, the Academic Library
Association of Ohio, and the OCLC Users Council. She
has an MLS from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee,
an MA in Communication Studies from Governors State
University and is currently pursuing classes in
Computer Information Systems at College of DuPage.

For the second discussion, Tamara J. Miller, Professor
and Head of Planning and Outreach, University of
Tennessee Libraries, will describe the Digital Media
Center at UT. The Center, a unique collaboration
between the library and campus technologists, provides
a full range of digital media services to faculty in
support of instructional activities. The Center
includes an innovative "Studio" that transforms the
Audiovisual Department into a digital media laboratory
designed to help students integrate digital media into
their class assignments.

This "cutting edge" integration of digital media into
the curriculum should generate a lively discussion of
ways to revamp media services in the digital age.

Ms Miller, former president of the Library and
Information Technology Association (LITA), is
currently responsible for planning and assessment,
coordination of grants and research, oversight of
public relations and outreach activities at the
University of Tennessee Libraries. She has previously
held committee assignments with the Coalition for
Networked Information, EDUCAUSE, the national
Commission on Preservation and Access and the Digital
Library Federation. Her recent work focuses on the
development of digital libraries of scholarly
materials and public policy issues affecting scholarly
communication.
