Since the mid 1990's KSU Libraries has made significant changes directed

General scope of work:
The Chair of Social Science / Humanities (SS/HUM) and General Reference is a
member of the Kansas State University Libraries management team, known as the
Cabinet Operations Team (COT). In that capacity the Chair supports the
mission of
the university and libraries through the management, direction, and
oversight of faculty
and staff in the Department.
Specific duties:
*Supervises Faculty Subject Specialists in the
department who have responsibility for consultative and specialized
reference, developing liaison relationships with faculty, selecting and
collecting resources in support of faculty teaching and research, and
providing discipline specific instruction for students
*Management / supervisory responsibility for
the microforms department, the Weigel Library (College of Architecture), and
the General Reference Unit which provides "traditional" reference service
*Program and service development in the units
/ areas of responsibility is critical
*Participates in strategic planning as a
member of COT
*Assists in preparing the library's budget
and assumes responsibility for the expenditure of that budget relative to
programs and services identified in the KSUL Strategic Plan

*Responsible for collection development,
liaison work, consultative reference, and instruction for at least one
academic department
*Works with department personnel in making
progress toward "attainment of ARL status"
Education requirements:
MLS from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent
Special training or certificates preferred:
Background in the Social Sciences / Humanities
Previous experience in an academic library service environment.
That experience should reflect:
*evidence of leadership,
*experience with teams,
*evidence of bibliographic instruction,
*experience as a liaison,
*collection development experience,
*extensive supervisory / management
experience,
*experience using electronic databases, and
*evidence of experience and / or
understanding of digital content issues
Position prospective candidate would now hold:
Unit Head with management experience in a large reference library or a
higher level
position in a small academic or corporate library.
