I'm wondering if anyone could tell me the % increase (number of titles)
in scholarly publishing world-wide (or even just the US and the UK)
over the past 20 years? I'm really only looking for an approximation
(i.e. has it doubled, tripled, etc.).

YBP's approval plan coverage totals would give some idea of publishing
over these years.
These figures would refer to new books published in the US (many of
which originated in other countries, particularly the UK).
We have always attempted to be as thorough as possible in covering
university presses, so our figures for this category might be
especially revealing.
Our data doesn't go back quite 20 years, but in calendar year 1985,
we saw 5,153 university press titles.
Our university press total for YBP's 2000/2001 fiscal year was 10,130
titles. So, output roughly doubled over those 15 years or so.
YBP's totals for other (non-university press) titles are not quite
as representative, since our coverage of this publishing universe,
especially in earlier years, has been more selective than our university
press coverage.
Given that, our total for the non-university press universe for
calendar year 1985 was 20,633.
Our total for the 2000/2001 YBP fiscal year was 41,016.
So, this measure nearly doubled as well.
