Assistant Head, Collection Management Department

The NCSU Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position

of Assistant Head, Collection Management
Department. The NCSU Libraries has established the position of assistant

head in all its major departments as part of its
commitment to developing leaders for academic and research libraries.
The Collection Management Department develops the
Libraries' collections, allocates the collections budget, formulates
collection development policies, assesses users' needs, and
performs faculty liaison activities. The department, composed of nine
librarians, two staff, and one library Fellow, is strongly
committed to building collections that are responsive to user needs and
rich in electronic, multimedia, and print resources.
Collection Management is supported by discipline-based subject teams,
which draw together librarians with related
assignments to consider programmatic issues. The NCSU Libraries' current

budget for collections is approximately $8.5
million.

Responsibilities
Shares the management of a department that leads in building collections

of electronic resources, that is among the top 25 ARL
libraries in the growth of its print collection, that maximizes
licensing terms for the benefit of faculty and students, that is
actively engaged in scholarly communication issues, and that emphasizes
outreach to faculty and graduate students. Supervises three
librarians and one staff member. Manages the planning, policy
development, budgeting, and evaluation of library collections.
Performs collection management in subject specialty areas and takes a
leadership role in the relevant subject team. Develops
and maintains client-focused relationships with deans, academic
department heads, faculty, and students. Works with
counterparts in the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN) to
further historically strong cooperative collection
development programs. Serves on library-wide committees, task forces,
and teams. Librarians at the NCSU Libraries are
expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments
in the field. Reports to the Head of Collection
Management.

Qualifications
Required: ALA-accredited MLS. Minimum of three years' collection
management experience in an academic library. Academic
background or experience in science or engineering. Evidence of
effective collaboration with faculty, colleagues, and students.
Knowledge of applications of current and emerging technologies as they
meet the needs of library clients. Deep understanding
of scholarly communication and issues of ownership and access. Excellent

interpersonal skills; ability to communicate clearly,
knowledgeably, and personably, orally and in writing. Ability to work
independently and in a team environment. Ability to set
priorities effectively and resolve competing demands in an atmosphere of

fast-paced change. Demonstrated record of
contributions to the field. Preferred: Five years' professional library
experience. Research library experience. Experience in the
management of collection budgets. Supervisory experience.

Salary and Benefits
The Libraries offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience,
not less than $47,500 with required qualifications or
$52,500 with preferred qualifications for this position. Librarians have

academic status without tenure or rank. Benefits include:
24 days vacation, 12 days sick leave; comprehensive major medical
insurance, and state, TIAA/CREF or other retirement
options. Additional and optional dental, life, disability, deferred
compensation, and legal plans are available. The Libraries has a
strong commitment to supporting professional development. Tuition waiver

program for all campuses of The University of North Carolina is
available.
Relocation allowance.
