Dear CollDv-L,

We will be installing compact shelving and one of our scenarios is to
relocate all the humanities/social sciences/arts bound periodicals into
compact shelving, while keeping the current unbound issues in the Current
Periodicals Room. At the present time, the bound periodicals are integrated
with monographs, and arranged by their respective call numbers on
conventional book shelves.

Question: I would be curious to hear from other libraries about whether
they have done something similar and whether this has worked well from the
perspective of your library users and from the the perspective of your library
staff.

Re: Bound journals on compact shelving

The University of Utah has a similar dilemma. We are planning to
remodel our building and to meet ADA requirements, stacks have to
be spread out. We can fit only a little over half of the collection in
the new open stacks - the rest will need to be in compact shelving.

The scenario which may make the most sense includes putting all
the bound journals - including the sciences - into compact shelving.

Otherwises, our arrangements are as at Irvine.

We would be very much interested in hearing about other libraries'
experience with compact shelving also,
Thanks,
