Recently, I received a brochure announcing the first edition of _The Best
Books for Academic Libraries: a core collection of 60,000 books recommended
for college libraries_. It states that it is the "first comprehensive subject
bibliography to be published in over a decade." It is to be published in 10
volumes (pre-publication price is $600 per set and $900 per set after
publication). Each volume covers such subjects as Science & Technology,
Medicine, Language & Literature, etc. and is published by The Best Books,
Inc., PO Box 893520 Temecula, CA 92589-3520. It states: "We have asked
subject librarians and subject specialists to select the very best one-third
of 180,000 titles from our database..."

Since I have not been able to find any reviews, I wondered if anyone on the
list is aware of this publication? Under whose auspices was this done? Does
anyone know anything about this company? I would appreciate hearing what
others know about this publication.

Several years ago (maybe two or three), I called ALA/ACRL and they told me
then that they expected to have a new edition of Books for College Libraries
in 2002 or 2003.
