CDL-CHINESE VCD's AND COPYRIGHT

One of our professors has offered to purchase VCD's in China and bring them 
back for addition to our collection. We are worried about whether some of 
these might violate copyright.

How do you know whether this is the case? Stick to reputable vendors? I 
would appreciate any advice or suggestions anyone may have.
