I am interested in hearing what policies you may have in place in regard to
duplicating electronic serials.
At the University of Oklahoma Libraries, we have been duplicating serials
whenever it is free or very inexpensive to do so. This means that some
titles may be available through 3 different aggregators; for example, IQ
(Faxon), ECO (FirstSearch) and Catchword (Ingenta). Only ECO costs us
anything. The idea was that if one site was down, the others might be up
and available (although it is true that sometimes a site like IQ or ECO just
feeds a user to Catchword...). We have been willing to pay a nominal fee to
FirstSearch for ECO access because it means our users find fulltext not only
in ECO, but throughout our other 20+ FirstSearch databases.
We are beginning to question, however, whether this is a good policy or not.
It does take time to track and add links to our online catalog, and we are
paying for something in ECO that we may often already have for free or have
paid for already by acquiring a journal package such as Blackwell Synergy.
Any info on your policies, experiences, thinking, would be welcomed, and if
you respond directly to me, I will be happy to summarize for the list.
