In November 1999 the Center for Research Libraries hosted a conference
on "Creating New Strategies for Cooperative Collection Development" to
discuss current initiatives in cooperative collection development and to
seek ways to expand the scope of this activity in the future. One outcome
of the conference was an action item calling for the creation of a map of
current cooperative collection development projects. To meet this charge,
the working group intends to create and maintain an accessible,
authoritative, and up-to-date resource that reports who is doing what in
the arena of cooperative collection development. The map will enable
interested librarians to evaluate the state of CCD and serve as a resource
document for persons contemplating CCD projects or seeking potential
CCD partner libraries.

The brief survey at the link below is intended to inform the working group
of CCD projects currently underway. We will consider for inclusion in our
"map" any collaborative activity characterized by planned, coordinated
collection development and/or management. All collaborative enterprises,
even informal working arrangements, are eligible for inclusion as long as
they are active and viable. Our definition of CCD encompasses consortia
that purchase electronic databases and collaborative digitization projects.

Please return the survey by Friday, December 7, 2001. We ask that, if
possible, participants in each project designate one person to respond for
the entire project. Our preliminary CCD map will be based upon the data
reported in the survey. Since we intend the map to be an evolving and
regularly revised resource, however, we will certainly accept revisions,
additional information, and documentation after this deadline. Another
CRL working group is charged with identifying best practices in CCD.
This group may contact some survey respondents for additional
information.

Your response is very important for the success of this endeavor. Thanks
in advance for your help.
