From: "Nafziger, Christopher L." <CNafzige_at_fgcu.edu>
I am a Reference technical assistant working with the Librarian responsible
for developing our University's Library video collection. We are trying to
find out if any academic library, in particular, has developed a core list
of films an academic library should have. We are looking for a list of
classic American and foreign films on video. Library literature and several
Internet searches have produced no results. This is why I am posting this
message. Any suggestions or lists would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, in advance

If you haven't done so already, you may want to send a message to the Video
Librarian's discussion list (VIDEOLIB_at_LIBRARY.BERKELEY.EDU){HYPERLINK
"/LiblistsQueries/TDetail.idc?LisID=268"}. When I was an assistant in a
media collection (until 1998), I found this discussion list to be extremely
valuable.
Gary Handman, Head of the Media Resource Center at the University of
California, Berkeley is particularly knowledgeable and has pulled together
some useful links on the Media Center's website:

When I was responsible for ordering videos, I found that Facets Multi-
media (http://www.facets.org/) had very good customer service and prices.
The very knowledgeable contact person I had there has retired, but I hope
that they have replaced her with someone equally informative. They also
have a few film lists available in catalog form (see Free Catalogs on their
website) that might be useful.
I hope you will find these resources helpful.

The Library of Congress website lists films that have been named to the
National Film Registry. Each year they add films that are deemed worth
preserving. It's not a core list for an academic library as such, but it
might be worth viewing. You can find it at:

The only list I know of is the American Film Institutes selections of best
films. Try: www.afionline.org/
I could check w/ the CCUMC(Consortium of College and University Media
Centers) to see if they have comprised such a list. A couple of places to
look :
http://www.ccumc.org which is the website for the above organization. If that
does not work try e-mailing ccumc_at_ccumc.org with your question.
You might also try the University Film & Video Association at the University
of Memphis Dept. of Communications (901)678-2565.

When I wanted to start a basic DVD collection and then music CD's, the
representative from Baker and Taylor Entertainment was quite helpful in
generating some core lists to get the collections started. It may be that
their academic collection development experts could do the same for you.
