The University of California, Berkeley seeks an energetic and creative
librarian to serve as a team member of the
Teaching Library, a department devoted to instructing students in the
effective use of information resources and
research methodologies. The librarian in this position will also be
responsible for overseeing the assessment,
development, and management of book collections within the Moffitt
Library.
The UC Berkeley Library system includes the Doe/Moffitt Libraries, The
Bancroft Library, the East Asian Library
and 20 subject specialty libraries. The UC Berkeley Library has a user
population of 23,000 undergraduates,
9,000 graduate students, and 1,500 faculty. The collection includes
over 9 million volumes, 56,000 current serial
titles, 15,000 videos and DVDs, and access to more than 200 electronic
databases and 4000 e-journals. The
Doe/Moffitt libraries have a collection of 1.8 million volumes,
150,000 of which are part of the undergraduate
library collection. The Doe/Moffitt Libraries are organized under the
direction of the Associate University Librarian
and Director of Doe/Moffitt into four administrative departments:
Circulation Services, InterLibrary Services,
Instructional Services; and Research, Reference, and Collections.
The Teaching Library program is based in the Moffitt Library and
reports to the Head of Instructional Services.
The Media Resources Center and the Library Graphics Office are also a
part of this unit. The mission of the
program is to help students develop the skills required to locate,
critically evaluate, and effectively use information
and information resources. To these ends, Teaching Library staff are
involved in broad range of programs and
activities, including general and course-integrated instruction
sessions and workshops; service on reference desks
in the Doe/Moffitt library; developing online and print instructional
resources; evaluating and assessing teaching
tools and methodologies; participating on key library and campus
committees related to teaching and learning; and
faculty outreach. As services and functions within the Doe/Moffitt
Libraries continue to evolve to meet the
changing academic needs of campus, there is an opportunity to
participate creatively in library-wide discussions
regarding the present and future of library instruction and
information literacy, as well as library services to
undergraduates.
Responsibilities
Under the general direction of the Head of Instruction, the successful
candidate will participate in designing and
facilitating library-related instruction for Berkeley's diverse
student population. Teaching responsibilities include
providing course-integrated instruction and general walk-in sessions
and workshops, as well as individual research
and term paper consultation. These responsibilities will entail
working closely with other library staff, and with
faculty and graduate student instructors to develop instructional
strategies, projects, and resources that meet
general and specific curricular objectives and goals. The incumbent
will also participate in various workshops
and programs for library staff, faculty, and other campus units hosted
by the Teaching Library. In addition to
classroom instruction, the incumbent will provide regular reference
services at the public service desks in the
Doe/Moffitt Libraries.
The incumbent will also serve as collection development librarian for
the Moffitt Library collection. The collection
currently comprises approximately 150,000 volumes, largely in the
humanities and social sciences. The successful
candidate will assume an active role in coordinating the reassessment
and revitalization of Moffitt collections in light
of the current and projected needs of campus users and programs.
Collection development responsibilities
include: leading an initial survey and analysis of Moffitt's current
collections and collection use patterns; developing
collection development policies; identifying gaps and weeding needs in
the collection; consulting with a broad array
of library users and library staff regarding the future of the
collection. On-going collection responsibilities will
include selecting materials in a variety of disciplines; maintaining
the collection; coordinating collection activities
with Doe Library selectors, selectors in subject specialty libraries,
and with Technical Processing operations.
Professional contributions beyond the primary job, e.g., publications,
leadership in University and professional
organizations, and other research and creative activity are required
for advancement within the Librarian series.
Candidates must show evidence of or potential for such contributions.
Qualifications:
Required: an MLS/MLIS from an ALA accredited institution, or
equivalent degree. Familiarity with the concepts,
goals, and methods of information literacy and library instruction;
recent experience in providing library instruction,
or other applicable classroom instruction experience.
The candidate should also have experience in providing reference
service to a large diverse library clientele,
including a broad familiarity with both print and online information
sources. Experience or training in collection
development and management, particularly in the humanities and social
sciences, is highly desirable.
Candidate must have excellent analytical, interpersonal, and
communication skills, and must show evidence of both
professional initiative and flexibility; demonstrated ability to work
effectively with a diverse population of faculty,
students, and staff.
