The University of Tennessee Libraries seeks an innovative 
professional to join the Reference & Instructional Services
Team and serve as a subject librarian in the Social Sciences. 
Responsibilities will emphasize outreach to students and
faculty through consultation and instruction in the areas of 
communications, psychology, and social work. 

ENVIRONMENT: The University of Tennessee is a Carnegie 
Research Level One institution and enrolls approximately
26,000 students from the United States and 100 other countries. 
UT is one of 27 higher education institutions holding the 
distinction of being both a land-grant institution and 
state university. The UT Libraries, with an annual budget 
exceeds $11 million, holds 2 million volumes and receives 
approximately 10,000 current serials. The Libraries system 
includes the John C. Hodges Library and four branches on the 
Knoxville campus. Over three hundred persons are employed, 
including 49 librarians. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: This position is part of the Reference and 
Instructional Services Department, reporting to the Social Sciences
Coordinator, and participating in the work of the department 
and social science subject group. The librarian provides 
general and advanced subject-specific reference assistance 
in the main (Hodges) library's busy reference environment 
(including night and weekend rotation), which includes a 
government documents reference area and collection. 
Instruction may take the form of classroom presentations, research
consultations, on-site assistance in departmental labs or offices, 
and may include interaction with students enrolled in 
distance education. Collection development and management 
responsibilities include selecting, organizing, and assessing 
materials in all formats; conducted in cooperation with other 
subject librarians and with input from faculty in assigned 
departments. This position promotes services available through 
the libraries and facilitates communication with the campus 
community about library and information issues; works with 
library colleagues to coordinate services and to implement 
programs and projects; and serves on library and university 
committees. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: MLS from ALA-accredited program. 
Knowledge of major social science databases and reference 
sources. Evidence of excellent communication and presentation 
skills and the ability to work with all types of library 
users and staff. Commitment to quality user services in an 
academic library environment. Experience creating and/or 
maintaining web resources and an interest in uses of 
information technology in a digital library. Knowledge of 
scholarly communication and publishing trends in the social 
sciences. Commitment to scholarship and professional growth. 
Ability to adapt and work creatively in a rapidly changing 
and challenging environment. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Academic background in the behavioral 
sciences and professional reference experience in a research 
library environment. Experience with instruction and 
collection development. Evidence of research or creative 
achievement. 

SALARY and BENEFITS: Minimum for Assistant Professor, $33,000; 
for Associate Professor, $40,000. Faculty rank and status; 
twelve-month, tenure-track appointment. Library faculty must 
meet University requirements for promotion and tenure. 
Excellent benefits include 24 annual leave days; choice of 
state retirement plan or TIAA/CREF with nonrefundable 
contributions paid for the employee by the University; 
optional group health and life insurance plans; and 
tuition remission.
