I am new to this list and I'd like to ask for your views on a slippery
matter...it concerns qualitative assessments of a collection, for
purposes of accreditation.

Here in Ontario, Canada, accreditation for graduate programs falls
under the jurisdiction of the Ontario Council of Graduate Studies.
Under Library Resources, there is a statement that "A qualitative
analysis of the collections against existing standards for the
discipline, where these standards exist, is most useful."

I wonder whether you are required to prepare qualitative
assessments of your collections, and if so, what standards do you
use ? Obviously the tools and techniques will vary from discipline
to discipline. Quality can be argued from many points of view - how
do you measure it if you are required to do so ?

Thanks in advance for any information or experience you can shed
on this issue.

I'm very interested in hearing from any of you who have experience
