Collection Development List participants subscribers may want to take a
gander at the "Selector Toolboxes" we've created for our public library
system's selectors.
Our library system is moving from a selection list-based selection
process to an environment where each of our three dozen or so branch and
Central Library department managers and their selectors will be using a
variety of methods - anything except a set of monthly systemwide
selection lists - to decide what to buy and how to find out what's out
there to buy. One of the ways our Collection Development Unit hopes to
assist our agency managers and selectors is by providing, on one of our
library system's staff web pages, an annotated list of hyperlinks to
web sites useful to selectors working in public libraries. We've
actually created (and will be updating) two sets of web resources: one
for selectors of materials for adults, another for selectors of YA/Juvie
materials. The list for selectors for adults that I created (a colleague
created the other one) got so large so quickly that I had to create an
index (also with hyperlinks), so selectors can find what they need
quickly without having to scroll down looking for their resource(s) in
the main alphabetically-arranged list.
I would welcome any suggestions for additional items for our
"Toolboxes"; suggestions about improvements to the format of our
"toolboxes"; alerts to other library
staff web pages that include resources similar to our "Toolboxes" (so I
can plunder them!); and comments on which specific selection-related web
sites others who are using the web to them select library materials have
found most helpful.
