RESPONSIBILITIES: Serve as bibliographer for American, British, and
Commonwealth literature, provide general and specialized reference service
and bibliographic instruction, and serve as a bibliographic specialist for
out-of-print and brittle materials at the Perry-Castaneda Library. The
English Literature Bibliographer evaluates and selects materials in all
formats to support the work of faculty and students in the Department of
English, the Division of Rhetoric and Composition and related programs;
provides specialized reference consultations and library instruction;
conducts collection development and evaluation projects; makes preservation
and storage decisions; and manages relevant web resources and materials
funds. The librarian is a member of the Fine Arts and Humanities Cluster
and works collaboratively with bibliographers in other disciplines and with
librarians in the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center
(http://www.hrc.utexas.edu/). Reference responsibilities include serving
on the library's main reference desk as part of a team of both
professionals and paraprofessionals, and participating in the library-wide
instructional program. As a member of the Collection and Information
Resources Division (http://www.lib.utexas.edu/cird/), the English
Literature Bibliographer participates in Division discussions and planning,
serves as liaison to Preservation Services, coordinates the Division's
preservation replacement and reformatting efforts, manages the library-wide
monographic replacements and reformatting fund, initiates and participates
in the development of electronic text opportunities, participates in the
Division's print and web publishing activities, actively fosters staff
collaboration and communication across departmental and divisional lines,
and responds to new opportunities with initiative, creativity, and
leadership. This position reports to the Assistant Director for
Collections and Information Resources.
The Perry-Castaneda Library is the main library of the University of Texas
at Austin library system (http://www.lib.utexas.edu/) with emphasis on
social sciences, humanities, business, and education. The Department of
English includes 71 faculty and enrolls approximately 1,000 undergraduates,
60 masters, and 120 doctoral students. The General Libraries serves 50,000
students and 2,000 faculty.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: MLS from an ALA accredited graduate program. A
degree or collection development experience in English Literature.
Demonstrated abilities in reference service and instruction and thorough
knowledge of academic electronic information resources.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated public speaking, teaching,
interpersonal, writing, and analytical problem solving skills.
Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a collegial and
collaborative manner in a fluid technical environment. Strong service
orientation. Ability to meet challenging situations with flexibility and
tact. Two years professional library experience. Working knowledge of the
out-of-print book market. Demonstrated potential for leadership in
university, state, national, and international programs and initiatives.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary range is $34,000 to $42,000 or more annually,
depending on qualifications and experience. No state or local income tax.
Standard state benefits package including annual vacation and sick leave,
paid holidays, retirement plan and health insurance (comprehensive major
medical plans or HMO plans, dental plans, vision, life, disability).
Deferred compensation and tax sheltered annuity programs also available.
