Subject: CDL-PUBLIC LIBRARIES: HOW LONG DO YOU KEEP FICTION CATALOGS
From: Suzanne Morlock <smorlock_at_will.state.wy.us>
Hello,
I'm looking for some guidance on how long public libraries typically keep
old editions of the Public Library Catalog.
Thank,

My Library doesn't make it a practice any longer to keep older editions
of Public Library Catalog. To be honest, I haven't looked at the Public
Library Catalog in over a year.

I'm a consultant to 67 public libraries in the center of Texas and have been
doing collection development for most of my 26 years in public libraries. I
would not recommend that public libraries keep old editions of Public Library
Catalog unless they are keeping it for the reviews in lieu of Book Review
Digest or similar sources. Many online services now have book reviews or
excerpts of current materials; old editions of PLC would only have older
materials.
If you are considering using it for weeding decisions, a better tool is the
CREW Method, available from the Texas State Library, 1-800-252-9386.

Suzanne: I only keep the most recent edition. But, then again, I
haven't found it to be the most useful of collection aids. It would
depend upon how you are using it. Suzan
