Collection Development Coordinator

Rice University, a private university located in Houston Texas, is seeking
a highly motivated librarian committed to building academic library
collections and services tailored to the present and future needs of our
academic community. Candidates with a strong combination of bibliographic,
technical and interpersonal skills are encouraged. The position reports to
the Assistant University Librarian for Collections.

Responsibilities include: monitor the effectiveness and performance of the
library's book approval services, plan and implement changes in
coordination with library selectors (14 professionals in various library
departments) and technical services staff; work in collaboration with AUL
for Collections to develop and manage scaleable approaches to commercial
digital resources, support efforts to digitize primary resources and use of
these products in curricular settings; assertively pursue outreach to a
wide range of faculty, students and staff; take primary responsibility for
building and managing collections (in all formats) in support of one or
more academic discipline; provide reference services to the Rice University
community and the general public.

Participate in professional activities on campus and at local/national
levels.

Qualifications
Requirements: ALA-accredited MLS; minimum of 2 years demonstrated
experience in collection development in an academic setting; demonstrated
experience and facility with digital projects (e.g. web page development,
digitization of library resources, commercial electronic resources);
excellent communication, planning, and organizational skills; ability to
work independently; demonstrated ability to work well with others in a
close, sustained collaboration.

Preferred: reading ability in one or more major European languages;
academic background in one of the humanities.

Salary/benefits: $40,000 minimum, with hiring salary commensurate with
experience and qualifications; no state or local income tax; career

Science Reference/Collection Development Librarian

Rice University, a private university located in Houston, Texas, is seeking

providing reference and information services, user education and collection
development in the areas of the natural sciences and/or engineering. The
position reports to the Head of Reference.

Responsibilities: provides reference, research assistance and user
education services to students, faculty and the general public; instructs
and assists patrons individually and in small groups in the use of print
and electronic resources; participates in library orientations and tours;
prepares written guides and bibliographies as needed; works with faculty on
providing specific user education to classes; develops and manages library
collections (in all formats) in assigned areas of the natural sciences
and/or engineering; consults with and advises academic departments on the
selection, acquisition and retention of library materials.

Requirements: ALA-accredited MLS; undergraduate degree in a science or
engineering discipline or demonstrated collection development experience in
an academic setting; working knowledge of basic reference sources,
including print, online databases and use of the internet in the research
process; excellent interpersonal and customer service skills and written
and oral communication skills; strong microcomputer skills.

Preferred qualifications: advanced degree in relevant scientific
discipline; 2 years previous experience in an academic library; HTML and/or
web authoring skills; project management skills; reading knowledge of a
foreign language.
