POSTING
THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO LIBRARY
BIBLIOGRAPHER FOR ENGLISH, FRENCH, AND ITALIAN LITERATURES

The University of Chicago Library is seeking candidates for the position of
Bibliographer for English, French, and Italian Literatures. The
Bibliographer is responsible for developing and maintaining in all relevant
formats the Library's collections in English and American, French, and
Italian languages and literatures as well in general literary and critical
theory. The Bibliographer provides specialized reference service and
bibliographic instruction for faculty and students. The Bibliographer also
participates in committee work at the divisional, interdivisional, and
academic department levels.

The Library's collection of these literatures consists of a full spectrum
of resources and continues to be built aggressively: some 250,000 print
titles including strong rare book holdings, manuscript collections,
microform and audiovisual formats, and substantial and rapidly expanding
electronic resources. Access to many of the full-text databases on the
campus network results from ongoing collaboration between the Library and
ARTFL (Project for American and French Research on the Treasury of the
French Language) to develop PhiloLogic, a sophisticated searching tool
applicable to texts in many languages. The collections for which the
Bibliographer is responsible support the research and teaching programs of
faculty in the Departments of English, Romance Languages and Literatures,
and Comparative Literatures, the work of graduate students, and the
undergraduate curriculum.

The Library provides generous support for collection building including a
strong commitment to electronic formats and to ongoing retrospective
acquisition of out-of-print material as well as current imprints. The
Bibliographer enjoys opportunities to work collaboratively with faculty and
students as well as with fellow bibliographers, the Department of Reference
and Information Services, the Department of Special Collections, and the
Digital Library Development Center. More information on the Library, its
collections and initiatives is available at: http://www.lib.uchicago.edu

The Bibliographer for English, French, and Italian Literatures reports to
the Assistant Director for Humanities and Social Sciences.
