HIRIING ORGANIZATION: State Historical Society of Wisconsin; Library 
Acquisitions Section of the Library and Archives Division.

SALARY: Starting salary $38,565 - $59,777 annually commensurate with 
experience; excellent benefits. Pay for a current state employee will be 
calculated according to the State's compensation plan. A one-year 
probationary period is required.

DUTIES: This position reports to the Head of Library Technical Services and 
is responsible for development, operation, programming, and maintenance of 
the Historical Society's Library Acquisitions Section. The incumbent acts 
as chief selection officer for the library; coordinates the development of 
the general collections. Approves annual expenditures of $320,000 for the 
additions to the library's collections of over 3.7 million books, 
pamphlets, newspapers, periodicals, and microform items; functions as 
liaison to collection development librarians on the University of 
Wisconsin-Madison campus; supervises a staff of six permanent full-time 
employees (one Historical Collections consultant, two Librarians, and three 
Library services assistants) and several contributed staff; and supervises 
all phases of program development and operation of the three units of the 
acquisitions section: Order, Gifts and Exchanges, and Newspapers and

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: Advanced knowledge of the 
literature and research methods in North American history, genealogy, and 
related fields; advanced knowledge of the theory, practice, and literature 
of librarianship in general and collection development in particular; 
current knowledge of the book trade, serials acquisitions, and electronic 
information products, particularly in the fields of North American history, 
genealogy, and related fields; advanced knowledge of library automation 
applications, particularly as applied to library acquisitions; basic 
knowledge of one or more of the following languages: French, Spanish, 
German; excellent oral, written, interpersonal communications skills; 
ability to teach classes, lead workshops, and facilitate seminars for 
educators, librarians, and a wide variety of other audiences; ability to 
plan, organize and conduct conferences, professional development meetings, 
workshops, and other large public gatherings of profess!
ionals and the general public; excellent human resource management skills; 
ability to use word processing, spreadsheet and database programs, internet 
browsers and database searching techniques, and basic web design products.
