Social Sciences/Humanities Coordinator
The LSU Libraries are seeking an energetic, ambitious, and highly
motivated faculty member with potential to direct collection
activities in Social Sciences and selected Humanities subjects.
This is a tenure-track position (Assistant or Associate Librarian
rank) offering substantial opportunity for growth in an ARL library
that is moving strongly into more electronic information dissemination.
The Social Sciences/Humanities Coordinator will be responsible
for promoting innovative collection services, providing effective
leadership in introducing relevant discipline oriented programs
and services, maintaining and evaluating the library collection in
all formats, and developing and implementing policies and procedures
in response to the evolving needs of library users, faculty and staff.
The Coordinator will be involved in statewide resource sharing
projects in the Louisiana Online University Information Service and
the Louisiana Library Network
(LOUIS)[http://lsumvs.sncc.lsu.edu/ocs/louis/]
to meet the research needs of all academic libraries in the state.
This position will be directly responsible for developing and
managing designated LSU Libraries' collections and should have a
degree or extensive academic work experience in disciplines such
as history, sociology, geography, mass communication, English, etc.
Supervises librarians with social science/humanities liaison
responsibilities who are assigned to Collection Development for
forty percent of effort including supervising, training, and mentoring
liaisons, outreach and instruction activities; coordinating development
of worldwide web based resources for research guides; facilitating c
ommunication with the campus community about
library services and collection management issues;. allocating and
managing funds in relevant disciplines; planning, implementing,
evaluating projects to improve management of approval plans, journal
costs, and budget; providing general and subject specific reference
assistance (20%). Some evening and weekend duty may be required.
Reports to the Associate Dean for Collection Services for 80% of
duties and to the head of Reference Services for the remaining 20%.
Works to meet requirements for tenure and promotion.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: ALA accredited MLS degree. 3 - 5 years
relevant experience in increasingly responsible positions at a
large academic or research library; degree or substantive experience
in appropriate subject including literature, languages, history,
sociology, geography, education, political science, psychology,
business, mass communication or journalism. Comprehensive experience
with print and electronic resources; good computer skills; knowledge
of scholarly literature and publishing trends. Excellent communication
and presentation skills. Strong service orientation. Ability
to work collegially with all levels of users and staff.
PREFERRED (or desirable): Professional or preprofessional collection
development experience. Advanced degree in appropriate subject area.
Grant writing skills. Evidence of research or creative achievement.
SALARY: $40,000 minimum, dependent on qualifications and rank.
