The University of California at Berkeley is seeking an energetic and
creative individual to coordinate the acquisition of electronic resources,
in support of the teaching, learning, and research activities of the
University's faculty, students, and staff.

As the oldest and largest library in the University of California system,
The Library is a major California research facility and is nationally
renowned. The Library serves over 23,000 undergraduates, 9,000 graduate
students, and almost 1,500 faculty. Current collections include over 9
million volumes and over 56,000 current serial titles. Library facilities
on the Berkeley campus include the Doe/Moffitt Library complex, The
Bancroft Library, the East Asian Library and more than 20 additional
libraries serving specialties and the professional schools. The Library is
a member of the Center for Research Libraries (CRL), the Association of
Research Libraries (ARL), Online Computer Library Center (OCLC), and the
Research Libraries Group (RLG). The Library is an active participant in
the California Digital Library. The Library has a budget of $50 million,
and employs over 440 FTE, including professional and para-professional
staff, and more than 600 part-time students.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the Associate University Librarian, Director of Collections,
the incumbent works closely with over 60 subject selectors, and serves as a
liaison between the selectors and the ordering, serials, cataloging, and
systems units in overseeing the smooth integration of electronic
subscriptions and purchases into the University Library collections. The
tasks for which the incumbent is responsible include: monitoring
collections appropriations and expenses, especially those for digital
purchases; negotiating with vendors, reviewing licenses and coordinating
trials; working in consultation with systems staff to ensure convenient and
reliable user access; and participating in user training and outreach, as
needed. The incumbent leads or participates in other collection management
projects, as assigned. The incumbent assists the Director of Collections
with cooperative collection development activities among the UC campuses
and, in particular, with the California Digital Library to optimize
Berkeley's access to UC digital collections and to incorporate campus
collections into those of the university-wide system.

Professional contributions beyond the primary job, e.g., publications,
leadership in University and professional organizations, and other research
and creative activity are required for advancement within the Librarian
series. Candidates must show evidence of such contributions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required: An MLIS from an ALA accredited institution, or equivalent
degree, and relevant professional experience. Excellent oral and written
communication skills; demonstrated ability to work in a team-oriented work
environment; excellent interpersonal skills with ability to lead and
collaborate; knowledge of issues in electronic scholarly communication and
experience in managing and delivering alternative formats; planning and
project management experience; budget management; ability to meet deadlines
and to work productively within an environment of rapid development and
change; commitment to personal professional development.

Preferred: Five years progressively responsible experience in an academic
research library; experience in selection and licensing of resources;
familiarity with current information technologies and current issues in
technical services librarianship.
