POSITION:       Assistant University Librarian for Collections and Resource 
Services

DESCRIPTION
                 The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Library 
seeks an experienced collection management librarian to provide innovative 
and energetic leadership in the newly created position of Assistant 
University Librarian for Collections and Resource Services. The University 
Library collections total over 5 million volumes and the electronic 
component of the collections is growing rapidly as is the infrastructure to 
support access to electronic information from around the world.

                  The Assistant University Librarian is responsible for 
articulating a vision for collection development that meets the 
instructional and research needs of the University and the goals of the 
Library.  The AUL works with faculty and librarians to create policies that 
realize collection objectives, implements programs for the selection and 
evaluation of resources, and coordinates and evaluates the collection 
development and management activities of more than thirty selectors across 
the Library.  The Assistant University Librarian also heads the Library's 
Collection Development Department, which includes three central 
bibliographers for the humanities, social sciences, and Western Europe; 
three area studies bibliographers for East Asia, Iberia/Latin America, and 
Slavic/Eastern Europe; and support staff.

                 The Assistant University Librarian recommends the 
allocation of and manages the library materials budget of more than 7 
million dollars not including expenditures in the separately administered 
Health Sciences and Law Libraries. The Assistant University Librarian also 
collaborates with the collection managers in the Health Sciences and Law 
Libraries and works closely with the position's counterparts in the 
Triangle Research Libraries Network libraries to build collections 
cooperatively with Duke University, North Carolina State University, and 
North Carolina Central University.

                 The Assistant University Librarian reports to the 
Associate Provost for University Libraries through the Deputy University 
Librarian and serves as a member of the Library's senior management group.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:  ALA-accredited MLS and 5 years of increasing professional 
responsibility and leadership in collection management activities in a 
research library environment. A demonstrated broad knowledge of and 
experience with academic and research library collection management issues 
and of the trends and issues confronting higher education in today's 
rapidly changing environment. Significant experience in managing a 
collections budget.  Ability to articulate a vision of collection 
development and management in the electronic information environment and to 
provide digital content for the Library's web-based information 
services.  A commitment to cooperative collection building with other 
research libraries in both print and electronic format.  Strong 
interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively both orally and 
in writing.

Preferred:  A record of significant participation at the national level in 
organizations addressing collection management and/or electronic 
information issues. Demonstrated knowledge of collection development issues 
in area studies.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
This is a twelve-month academic librarian appointment with a minimum salary 
of $70,000.  Standard state benefits of annual leave, sick leave, and State 
or TIAA-CREF retirement plan.  Librarians are members of the general faculty.
