ANNOUNCEMENT OF VACANCY
COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT LIBRARIAN
RESPONSIBILITIES: Coordinate formulation of the collection development
policy, activities of librarians in the selection of materials, and the
systematic assessment of the library's collection and selection
practices.
Develop working relationships with faculty library representatives and
attend academic department meetings to discuss pertinent collection
development work. Assist in the preparation of accreditation studies
and
new academic degree requests including doctoral programs. Select
materials
and serve as liaison to selected academic departments. Evaluate gift
materials for the collection. Observe reference desk transactions to
learn about patron needs and use of the collection. Reports to the Head
Acquisitions Librarian.
QUALIFICATIONS: ALA-accredited masterís degree; previous collection
development experience preferably in an academic library; experience in
formulating and implementing policies and procedures; knowledge of
collection analysis methodologies, evolving copyright issues, and
publishing trends; understanding of issues related to the selection of
electronic resources; ability and commitment to work in a collaborative
team environment; effective communication, interpersonal,
organizational,
and leadership skills; ability to prepare and conduct training; ability
to
analyze workflow procedures; basic to intermediate microcomputer skills;
knowledge of OCLC and DRA or other automated library system.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: Assistant Librarian: $2,325 - $2,506 monthly,
Associate Librarian: $2,518 - 3,029 monthly, Librarian: $3,044 - $3,679
monthly. Salary based on qualifications and experience. Benefits include
monthly contribution to health insurance/benefits package and retirement
program. No state or local income taxes.
ALBERT B. ALKEK LIBRARY: (library.swt.edu): Holdings of the Alkek
Library exceed 1.2 million volumes. The library is a selective
depository
for U.S. Government and Texas documents, and is a participant in
TexShare. Special Collections is home to the Southwestern Writers
Collection, an archive devoted to the writers and artists of the region,
and the Wittliff Gallery of Southwestern & Mexican Photography. Access
to
physical and electronic collections and other bibliographic resources is
available through the DRA automated library system and other online,
CD-ROM, and Internet interfaces.
SWT AND SAN MARCOS: Southwest Texas State University is located in San
Marcos (sanmarcostexas.com), a scenic river community on the eastern
edge
of the Texas hill country between Austin and San Antonio. SWT has grown
from a small teachers college to a comprehensive university with an
enrollment of nearly 22,500 students offering undergraduate and master's
level instruction, as well as doctoral programs in environmental
geography
and geographic education. New doctoral programs are in development in
education, and in health care services, administration, research, and
policy.
