Reference and Information Services Department
The General Libraries - The University of Texas at Austin

Responsibilities:  Provide collection development, liaison, and library
instruction for the College of Communication.  Collection
responsibilities include selection of print and electronic materials,
collection evaluation, and management of funds.  Reference
responsibilities include service at the Perry-Castaņeda Library
reference desk and as faculty/student liaison.
Instruction responsibilities include course-integrated instruction,
creation and management of web pages, subject guides and instructional
materials.  Off-Campus Library services responsibilities include
coordination of the General Libraries services in support of students
enrolled in the university but who live outside the Austin area.  Will
identify, assist in planning for, and coordinate delivery of library
services, including reference assistance, library instruction,
interlibrary
loan, and document delivery provided by Internet-based and traditional
services and delivery mechanisms.  Will collaborate with library public
service units, bibliographers, Digital Information Literacy Office,
Inter-Library Service, and Digital Library Services Division. 
Collaborate with other campus entities and the University of Texas
System Tele-campus. Evening and weekend work required. The position
reports to the Head Librarian, Main Library Services Division.

The Reference and Information Services Department, located in the
Perry-Castaneda Library (PCL), the main library of the University of
Texas at Austin General Libraries, (http://www.lib.utexas.edu/),
emphasizes the social sciences, humanities, business and education.  The
College of Communication, (http://www.utexas.edu/coc/), the largest and
most comprehensive program of its kind, serves approximately 3,700
undergraduate and 500 graduate students and includes the departments of
Advertising, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Journalism,
Radio-Television-Film,  Speech Communication and the Program in Public
Relations.  Various campus and system entities collaborate to provide
off campus support for
non-resident students (http://www.utexas.edu/conted/).

Required Qualifications:  MLS from an ALA accredited graduate program. 
Experience providing reference or instruction services to library users.
Experience working in a technical environment, providing electronic
information resources and access services.

Preferred Qualifications: Evidence of initiative, creative energy,
resourcefulness and strong commitment to public service.  Academic
degree and/or professional experience in a communication discipline.
Post-MLS experience in an academic or research library.  Experience with
collection development and as a department liaison.  Familiarity with
technological aspects of off-campus services including experience with
delivery.  Working knowledge of networked information resources, search
engines and Internet client software.  Experience with multiple computer
platforms and operating systems and web publishing.  Evidence of
excellent written and verbal communication and problem solving skills. 
Demonstrated potential for leadership in university, state, national and
international programs and initiatives.

Salary and Benefits: Salary range is $32,000-$40,000 or more annually,
depending on qualifications and experience.  No state or local income
tax. Standard state benefits package including annual vacation and sick
leave, paid holidays, retirement plan and health insurance options
(comprehensive major medical or HMO plans, dental, vision, life, and
disability).  Deferred compensation and tax sheltered annuity programs
also available.
