We are embarking on the development of a policy
statement for print to electronic-only journal
access that will delineate conditions that must
be met before we decide to receive a journal or
journal service exclusively in electronic format.
Although we have made some decisions to receive
individual titles electronically-only, we've done
it without a stated guiding philosophy. Recent
announcements of price differentials between print
and electronic from the APS and others have convinced
us that we need to get something in writing and
get buy-in from our faculty so that we can make
conversions if our set of conditions is met. Obvious
factors to consider in formulating a conversion policy
include service reliability, acceptability of graphical
material, inclusion of all material from print issues,
guaranteed archiving (in all the complexity that phrase
implies), and price differentiation. Anyone else out there
working on such a policy -- has anyone finished one? Any
ideas welcome.
Please respond to the list.
