Good morning!

My name is Daniel Lee and I am Library and Information Studies student
at Dalhousie University (http://www.dal.ca) in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I
am new to the list, and I was hoping someone out there might be able to
help me.

As part of my program here at Dalhousie, I am taking a Collections
Management course this semester and as part of that course I am
presenting a seminar on how to collect appropriate foreign language
materials for significant immigrant or non-English speaking populations
when you have little or no knowledge of the foreign language(s). I'd
like to present some of the issues/challenges surrounding selecting such
materials and provide some guidance, tips, etc. for doing so. As well,
I'd like to reference any appropriate review sources.

Does anyone work for a library that provides materials for a significant
immigrant, non-English speaking community? Does the collection
development policy of your library include a section devoted to
guidelines for collecting foreign language materials? If so, would
it be possible to receive a copy of the policy? I'd like to present
examples of policies as part of the seminar.

I should clarify that I am not really interested in providing material
to language learners, but material to individuals with limited or no
english ability, although I guess language learners would also benefit
from such a collection.

Nevertheless, I am having very little luck in locating information on
this subject and so if you have any personal knowledge or guidance you
would be willing to share, including Internet resources, other policies
known to you, articles, major authors in the subject, etc. I would very
much appreciate it.

Thank you very much for your time and I look forward to hearing from
you.

Sincerely,

Daniel Lee
