VACANCY NOTICE
POSITION: Assistant Director for Collections, University at Albany, SUNY
The University at Albany, SUNY seeks an innovative and experienced
librarian to lead its collection development activities. This senior
administrative position, reporting to the Dean and Director of Libraries,
includes responsibility for managing a $4.3 million collections development
budget, shared responsibility for the administration of the Library, and
leadership, coordination and evaluation of the work of 12 Bibliographers
and selectors throughout the Library in building the library's collections,
both print and electronic. Responsibilities also include oversight of
divisional operations in Special Collections, University Archives, the
Campus Records Center, and the Preservation Office.
Albany is looking for an experienced leader, knowledgeable about the
mission of a research library, with a keen sense of the evolving role of
research libraries in the digital age. Advancing digital library
development will be as important as maintenance of print collections. The
Assistant Director will work actively with academic schools and departments
to determine selective areas of excellence and growth, to be reflected in
the Library's collection investment. He or she will develop effective means
of communicating information about the Library's collections and will work
collaboratively to build consensus and resolve problems. As a member of the
senior administrative group, the Assistant Director is responsible for
developing and implementing the mission and goals and broad policy
directions of the University Libraries and coordinating initiatives with
other assistant directors and library managers. She or he will be a strong
advocate for library faculty and staff and demonstrate an ability to mentor
and develop subject selectors. She or he will help lead the dynamic process
of change in the transition to the digital library in a research
environment. Research, publication and service to the Libraries and
University are expected to satisfy criteria for continuing appointment and
promotion of library faculty at the University at Albany.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: Graduate degree in librarianship from an ALA-accredited
institution. Successful, progressively responsible experience in developing
research library collections; management experience; and, a track record of
creativity in developing library programs. Strong analytical and budget
management skills; demonstrated ability to work across organizational
boundaries and to lead effective teams. Working knowledge of the scholarly
publications market and of electronic information products. Must
demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, organizational
and planning skills. Must demonstrate leadership, interpersonal, and
supervisory skills and an ability to manage change.
Preferred: subject specialization or an additional graduate degree, a
notable professional record or national reputation, knowledge of computing
technologies.
TERMS AND BENEFITS:
Twelve month appointment: minimum sick leave and annual leave at 15 days
each per year; health insurance, major medical or Health Maintenance
Organization and dental. Social Security coverage. TIAA/CREF or New York
State Teacher's Retirement available (employee contributes 3%, University
contributes 8%).
SALARY:
Commensurate with education and experience. Salary minimum of $67,000 +
administrative stipend

Albany's University Libraries are among the top 100 research libraries in
the United States. They are a highly valued partner in teaching and
research at the University, serve a campus community of 16,000 full-time
and part-time students and 2,300 faculty and staff and a broader regional,
national and international community. The Libraries employ a dynamic and
knowledgeable staff of 146 FTE and 300 part-time student assistants to

on these services. Collections total 2 million cataloged volumes and the
Libraries offer a full spectrum of resources, from rare books and
manuscripts to an array of electronic resources. Librarians work closely
with teaching faculty to offer an extensive program of user education and
information literacy instruction. The University Library on the main campus
is a large 175,000 square feet, 4 story building providing seats for 1,660.
It is open 109 hours a week. It contains several fully-networked library
classrooms and laboratories, a 60 seat computer user room, a large
networked reference area, and an interactive media center.
The Thomas E. Dewey Graduate Library for Public Affairs and Policy on the
Rockefeller College campus serves the graduate schools of Criminal Justice,
Public Administration, Social Welfare and Information Science and Policy.
The New Library, opened in September 1999, on the main campus adds 143,000
net square feet of space to the University Libraries and houses a
technologically advanced, 500,000 volume science library, the M. E.
Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives, and the Library's
Preservation Department.
The University Libraries are fully automated. GEOWeb, the Libraries'
ADVANCE system contains information on all cataloged holdings and is
Internet accessible. The Libraries provide an extensive array of electronic
and networked resources and Web-accessible services. They are members of
the Association of Research Libraries, The Research Libraries Group and The
