The Journal of Access Services --
**** Call for Papers ****
Volume one, spring 2001
"Access" is one of the most dynamic and powerful words in librarianship
today. Still,
even though it is commonly used in the professional literature, it is
extremely hard to
define. Access refers first to the policies and conditions that govern the
use of
library collections, services, and facilities. The access concept also
describes
how, through interlibrary loan, document delivery, and on-line networks
library
users can obtain materials from a broader universe of information resources.
Over the last decade, collection management librarians have developed entirely
new service models based upon the primary goal of providing access to
resources
as a more cost-effective alternative to purchasing them. Technology has also
affected the means by which access is gained. Many of these services are
un-mediated and customized. Administratively, these and many other concerns
have increasingly resulted in the creation of an emerging organizational
unit called "Access Services." Still, the literature has not yet caught up
with
current practice in librarianship. The Haworth Press is launching the
Journal of
Access Services -- the first to cover the field -- to fill this gap.
The first issue of the Journal of Access Services will explore the broad
parameters
the field through the theme "The Origin, Evolution, and Future of Access
Services."
Papers are now being solicited for topics such as:
§ Definitions and functions of Access Services.
§ The emergence of the Access Services concept in libraries.
§ Issues surrounding the debate over "access versus ownership."
§ Organization and administration of Access Services departments
§ Training, education, and development of Access Services staff.
§ The impact of information technology on Access Services.
§ Case studies in effective Access Services operations.
§ Copyright, licensing, and legal aspects of electronic access to
information.
§ Reviews of the recent literature of Access Services.
§ Future directions for Access Services.
§ Other topics as appropriate for the theme.
