From: Clem Guthro <guthro_at_macalester.edu>
I am new to this list and I have a request that I hope is
appropriate. I
am the Team Leader for Collection Management (Cataloging,
Serials,
Acquisitions, Preservation, and Collection Development) at
Macalester
College in St. Paul, MN.
I am involved in a Ed.D program at Nova Southeastern
University in Fort Lauderdale. My specialization is
computer and
information technology, expecially as it applies to
libraries and higher
education. As part of the program I must complete four
practicums
(mini/major research projects) that must relate to my
present work
situation.
I've now begun work on a practicum on developing a
collection development
strategy for identifying freely available web-based resouces
which should
be cataloged and added to our OPAC.
The intent here is NOT to develop a "collection development
policy" for
electronic resources but to look at how we (library staff)
take millions
of web sites and identify potential resources for review for
inclusion in
the OPAC. The strategy will also look at how we solicit or
allow input from
faculty, students, and staff, in building an electronic
collection.
The end result, I hope, will be a useful document that will
help us begin
to identify web-resources that should be cataloged and made
available
hrough the OPAC. Part of the rationale for this is to help
us (Macalester
cataloging staff) as we begin participating in OCLC's CORC
project. CORC
(Cooperative Online Resource Catalog) is a new OCLC
intiative to provide
MARC and Dublin Core descriptions of web-resources for use
in library OPACS
and library web pages.
Enough preamble. As part of the process I need a summative
committe who
will do two things 1) review criteria for the project that
has been
established and approved by the formative committee, and
make suggestions
for revision, and (2) review the final document and make
suggestions for
revision.
The actual time commitment should not be terribly
extensive. Evaluating
the criteria should occupy no more than 1 hour. Reading the
final document
and suggesting changes 3-4 hours. All business would be
conducted
electronically, or via snail mail.
Here is what I need: I would like to have a couple of
volunteers to serve
on the summative committee for this project. Please let me
know if you
think you can help me. I need a response by July 17th. I
should have a
complete copy of the practicum proposal that I could send to
you to look at
early next week. The proposal needs official approval first,
so I would
estimate that the first look at the "criteria" would be in
late July and
the final review in mid August.
If you can help, I need a bit of information from you,
specifically
education, #years experience, or interest in these areas,
etc. (Two or
three sentences max).
Thanks
