Readers of this list may be interested in the ALCTS President's Program
planned for Monday, July 10, 2000, from 10:00 a. m.- 12:30 p.m., Scholarly
Communication in the New Millenium: From Co-Dependence to Community.
Moderated by Brian E. C. Schottlaender, University Librarian, University of
California, San Diego three speakers will explore the need for us to move
beyond discussions of the serials crisis, the crisis in scholarly
communication and the crisis created by need to purchase the same material
in both print and electronic formats to solutions. David Shulenberger,
Provost at the University of Kansas is a leader in exploring these issues
in the AAU. He has proposed a new model for scholarly communication. Ken
Frazier is the founder of the SPARC initiative, an alternative model
sponsored by the Association of Research Libraries. Michael Rosenzweig is
implementing some of the alternative models through publication of the
alternative journal, Evolutionary Ecology Research.
