	Coordinator of Collection Development

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: 

	Manage collection development activities of the University Library.
Provide creative leadership in focusing current acquisitions and
incorporating new areas of scholarly inquiry into collection strengths, in
support of the University's programs.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:  

	Report to the Associate Director for Research and Instructional Services
who reviews performance for effectiveness and conformance with established
policies, but have substantial independent responsibility without immediate
supervision.  Communicate with and provide support for the Director of
Libraries on collections issues as needed.  Report to the Director in
capacity as Chair of the Collections - Acquisitions Access Team.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:  

	Have full responsibility for coordinating collection development in the
University Library, including supervision of all unit personnel and
management of all services involved in this activity.  Coordinate
activities of selectors assigned to various units of the Library.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:  
 
1.	Lead and manage all phases of collection development activity in the
University Library.  Formulate, disseminate, implement, administer and
revise related policies and procedures as required.
2.	Provide leadership in establishing goals and objectives of the Library
as they relate to collection development.  Evaluate collection development
performance in relation to established goals.
3.	Lead in establishing and monitoring the Library's acquisitions budget.
Work collaboratively with the Acquisitions and Resource Access units and
coordinate efforts of the Collections - Acquisitions Access Team to ensure
appropriate balance between purchase, access and document delivery.
Oversee major expenditures and ensure appropriate distribution of available
funds.
4.	Maintain current awareness of changes in academic directions and
programmatic needs of the University to ensure that these are supported by
the collections.
 5.	Lead the Library's efforts to integrate digital resources with
traditional formats to meet user needs and to maximize the use of financial
resources.
6.	Interpret collection policies and procedures to students, faculty and
staff as required.  Serve as point person for the library-faculty liaison
program.
7.	Coordinate activities and assign selection responsibilities to
professional librarians throughout the organization who select library
materials in all formats.  Train selectors and evaluate work performance
related to selection activities.
8.	Participate, as a unit head, in leadership of the Research and
Instructional Services Cluster.  Assist in formulating, revising,
implementing, and interpreting Cluster policies and procedures as necessary.
9.	Stay abreast of publishing industry trends, both traditional and
emerging.  Analyze the impact on libraries and take appropriate action to
incorporate these trends into the ongoing collections policies and
acquisitions of the Library.
10.	In conjunction with the Library Development office, oversee the
acquisition of gift materials.
11.	Ensure that the Library is an active participant in appropriate
consortial collection development arrangements.
12.	Maintain current awareness of relevant developments in the library
profession.  Participate in various professional organizations.  May
represent the Library at appropriate, selected professional meetings and
conferences.
13.	May be assigned some selection responsibilities as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:  

1.	Professional degree in library science from an American Library
Association-accredited library school
2.	Working knowledge of at least two foreign languages.
3.	Ten years of experience in an academic or research library, including
not less than three in areas related to collection development.
4.	Strong service orientation.
5.	Excellent interpersonal skills including ability to foster a collegial
work environment that encourages change and innovation; and ability to
interact effectively and work productively, collegially, cooperatively, and
collaboratively with a variety of individuals and groups in a changing
environment.
6.	Demonstrated ability to coordinate and supervise the work of others.
7.	Demonstrated ability to analyze work processes and introduce appropriate
technological solutions for greater efficiency of operations.
8.	Demonstrated ability to conceive and implement long-term strategies and
achieve short-term goals.
9.	Comprehensive knowledge of the publishing industry, both traditional and
emerging.
10.	Broad background in and knowledge of current trends in higher education
and the ability to interpret them in relation to the Library's collections.
11.	Broad background in a variety of academic disciplines.  Second advanced
degree in a discipline other than library science highly desirable.
12.	Experience working in a consortial environment desirable.
