Humanities Reference/Collection Development Librarian
Rice University, a private university located in an urban setting, is
seeking a highly motivated librarian committed to providing excellent
reference and research skills to the academic community. This librarian
will be responsible for collection development in several humanities areas
including history, provide outreach services to academic units in the
humanities, participate in general and subject specific user education, and
provide reference service. Some evening and weekend work is required.
The Fondren Library is a dynamic, user-centered library with opportunities
to participate in the development of leading edge library technologies in a
team setting. The reference/collection development librarian has contact
with a wide variety of constituents, including faculty, staff, students,
and members of the public, and serves as an important representative to the
University and community for library services. The library is in the
process of planning and constructing a major building renovation and
expansion.
Requirements: an ALA accredited MLS; undergraduate degree in a humanities
discipline; working knowledge of basic reference sources in print and
digital formats; excellent computer skills, including standard business and
communications applications as well as web authoring tools; excellent
written and oral communication skills; excellent customer service skills;
strong interpersonal skills; ability to establish and maintain effective
working relationships; and a demonstrated knowledge of the research
process.
Preferred: an advanced degree in a relevant humanities discipline; two
years previous experience in an academic library; knowledge of digital
library issues and facility with digitization processes; project management
skills; reading knowledge of a foreign language, preferably German.
Salary/benefits: minimum salary $35,000 with hiring salary based on
experience and education; no state or local income tax; career advancement
program; 21 benefit days; 8 study days; TIAA/CREF; health and life
