I would like to hear from ARL or near-ARL sized libraries about your main
library's policies relative to the circulation of bound periodicals. I'm
interested equally in those who do and those who don't, with or without
success. Please respond directly to
pmetz_at_vt.edu
and I will summarize to the list.

Here's a summary of the responses received to my question about the
circulation of bound periodicals. I appreciate having heard from 16
institutions. Of the 15 that can be fairly well categorized into "yes" or
"no", there are nine who do (60%). One can only speculate about response
bias either way. Since no one treated this as confidential, I thought I'd
include institutions in this brief summary. Apologies if I missed nuances.
Forgetaboutit (more or less flat no's):
1. Southern Queensland, Australia
2. Queens University in Ontario
3. Syracuse U Sci/Tech except six items for one hour, big fines
4. Rhode Island
5. Guelph except special permission (matches current Virginia Tech)
6. Ball State, with exceptions. Used to circulate them, quit due to problems.
Yes (note generally brief checkout periods):
1. Washington State, undergrads two hours, graduate students one day,
faculty three days
2. George Washington, one day
3. Utah, three days
4. Notre Dame, two days; formerly longer but it didn't work
5. Saskatchewan, three days
6. Colorado State, two days
7. Yale, if at least ten years old
8. Many University of Virginia libraries including main, seven days
9. Kansas State 1960 or later three days, earlier as if monographs. Would
like to move the cutoff to 1980 but not worth the systems grief
