I asked the list last week for input on guidelines about purchasing
faculty-authored works for the library's collection. These are the
responses:
17 libraries responded, all of whom purchase faculty-authored works.
13 libraries purchase all faculty-authored works
4 purchase only those within their collection development scope.
12 libraries put these works in a special collection, either within
Special Collections, or in Archives.
9 libraries mentioned purchasing two copies. Of these, 6 buy two coopies
of everything, putting one in circulation and one in Special
Collections. Three libraries only purchase the second copy if it is
relevant to the collection.
Four libraries mentioned special events honoring the faculty authors, such
as displays and receptions.
Three wrote that they also purchase alumni authored books, as well as
works by retired faculty, and ex-faculty.
A few wrote that the books are purchased outside the library budget, and
others mentioned that the library purchases the one or two copies.
One library also collects copies of refereed journal articles and papers
of significance for the faculty-authors special collection.
Thank you to everyone who responded.
