AN OPEN INVITATION

The University of Minnesota Libraries and MINITEX invite you to attend
Trends in the Academy and the Identity of Research Libraries.  Four
nationally recognized speakers will explore trends in higher education and
the identity of research libraries in the future. Speakers will examine
where the Academy is going, how research libraries will define themselves,
and what distinguishes research libraries in an increasingly digital
environment. 

¨ Dr. Stephen J. Rosenstone, Dean of the University of Minnesota College of
Liberal Arts, will consider the future of the Academy and trends,
expectations, needs. 
¨ Brian E. C. Schottlaender, University Librarian, University of
California/San Diego, will explore the future of the research library and
how it will meet changing needs and expectations.
¨ Anne Van Camp, Manager, Member Initiatives, Research Libraries Group,
will speak on the role that special collections and archives will continue
to play in defining the identity of individual libraries.
¨ Mark Sandler, Head, Research Services, University of Michigan Library,
will address the unique focus that area studies and international
collections bring to libraries. 

This year's Symposium will begin with a reception at the Elmer L. Andersen
Library on Sunday, May 21st at 5:00 p.m.  Hot hor d'eouvres will be served.
 The reception will feature tours of the Minnesota Library Access Center,
housed in the Andersen Library. The symposium will take place on May 22,
2000 from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm at the Earle Brown Continuing Education Center
on the St. Paul Campus of the University of Minnesota.


The cost of both the Symposium on Monday and the reception on Sunday will
be $70.00.

Attendees can also choose to select the Symposium Only option for a
registration fee of $50.00.

Both fees include lunch and breaks at the Symposium.

The Radisson Hotel Metrodome, located on the Minneapolis campus, is
offering a room rate of $95.00 per night plus tax.  This will be available

mention the University of Minnesota, Collection Symposium to receive the
preferred rate.  Reservations received after April 28 are subject to space
