COLLECTION MANAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT
WHAT: A three-credit graduate level institute offered by the Palmer School
of Library and Information Science of Long Island University.
WHEN: Monday-Friday, July 31-August 4, 9:00-5:00
WHERE: Manhattan campus of the Palmer School at the NYU Bobst Library,
Washington Square Park, NYC
DESCRIPTION: Aimed at the practitioner as well as the library school
student, this institute is intended to provide an overview of the
traditional practices of collection development and the tensions and
challenges created by the electronic environment. Through a combination of
readings, case studies, lectures and discussions we will focus on the
theoretical as well as the practical. Attendees can expect to get hands-on
experience with making selection and evaluation decisions in a variety of
formats. Though both instructors work in an academic library and focus on
the academic environment, the content of this institute is appropriate to
other library settings. The basic tenets of collection development work
are transferable from one library context to another, and examples and
documentation will be drawn from a variety of libraries.
INSTRUCTOR: Angela M. Carreno is the Coordinator for Collection Development
in the Social Sciences at Bobst Library at NYU. She is a member of the
library's Electronic Resources Committee and the Collection Development
Committee, will serve as the Interim Director of Collection Services during
the Spring and Summer of 2000. Since 1985 she has been active in the
Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials and, most
recently she was the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship in Peru advising
on the educational use of the Internet.
Evelyn Ehrlich is the Coordinator for Collection Development in the
Humanities and Head of General and Humanities Reference at Bobst Library at
NYU. In addition, she has extensive selection experience as the subject
