Position Title: Head, YRL Bibliographers Group

Salary Range: $40,248 - $ 68,112
Monthly Administrative Stipend: $ 350.00
DESCRIPTION OF UNIT:
The Young Research Library (YRL) Bibliographers Group is composed of
subject and language specialists who develop and manage library collections
for the YRL, UCLA's graduate library for the humanities and social sciences.
Bibliographers work closely with selectors from other UCLA Library units to
coordinate collection building and with staff of the YRL Acquisitions, Serials
and
Cataloging departments to facilitate the processing of materials. In addition
to selection and management responsibilities for the collections,
bibliographers serve as liaisons to academic departments and provide library
instruction in their areas of expertise.
DUTIES:
Under the general direction of the Associate University Librarian for
Collections and Technical Services, the Head of the YRL Bibliographers Group has
broad
administrative responsibility for the operations of the department. As Head,
the
incumbent is responsible for managing and providing leadership in the
development
and management of collections in the humanities and social sciences. In
addition,
the Head has responsibility for collection development in one or more areas of
the
humanities and social sciences. Management and administrative responsibilities
include: supervising and overseeing all personnel matters for a staff of 11.5
FTE including
recruitment, evaluation, training, and staff development; monitoring and
reconciling the operations budget; allocating and managing a materials budget of
approximately 2.1 million dollars; determining and implementing policies,
priorities, and procedures for operations of the unit; directing strategic
planning and carrying out of unit goals; advising the AUL on matters related to
the social sciences and humanities disciplines; representing the interests and
views of the department on administrative advisory committees; working with
other department heads to determine interdepartmental policies and procedures;
keeping the department informed of and aligned with library administrative
policies and goals; and serving as contact and liaison for the unit to clientele
on collection development matters not specific to individual bibliographers.
In addition to leading the department, the head will be responsible for
collection development and management of one or more areas of history and
possibly other subjects within the humanities and social sciences. Collection
development responsibilities
include: selecting and ordering current and retrospective library materials in
all formats;
managing funds; monitoring approval plans; making preservation and weeding
decisions;
reviewing and selecting materials for transfer to the Southern Regional Library
Facility;
developing and maintaining working relationships with publishers and vendors;
working closely with faculty and graduate students, including providing
consultation services and library
instruction. Like all professional librarians at UCLA, the incumbent is
expected to contribute to general Library and University service, and is
encouraged to be active within the
profession.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: Administrative or supervisory experience in collection
development in a research library or demonstrated ability to administer a
department of professional and support staff devoted to collection development
and management.
Graduate level study, or equivalent experience, in the humanities or social
sciences. Collection development experience in one or more areas of history.
Experience in
selection and management of electronic resources and knowledge of current trends
in information technology as they apply to collection management and
development.
A thorough understanding of research needs and the organization of scholarly
literature. Reading knowledge of at least one foreign language. Ability to
work well in a
changing and complex environment within a large organization, demonstrating
flexibility, initiative, and creativity. Excellent English communication and
interpersonal skills and ability to work with staff, students and faculty of
culturally diverse backgrounds.
Commitment to professional development and service.
Preferred: Research-level knowledge of Anglo-American History.
GENERAL INFORMATION:
Professional librarians at UCLA are academic appointees. They are entitled
