CHIEF COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT OFFICERS OF LARGE ACADEMIC RESEARCH LIBRARIES
COLLECTION PROGRAMS
CONFERENCES: CRL hosted the Creating New Strategies for Cooperative
Collection Development conference in Atlanta, Georgia November 12-14, 1999.
The conference was co-sponsored by ARL, RLG, CLIR and ICOLC. Featured
speakers were:
Dr. Myles Brand, President of Indiana University;
Professor Tom Shippey, Chair, English Department, St. Louis University;
Martha Gould, Vice-Chair, U.S. National Commission on Libraries and
Information Science;
David Shulenburger, Provost, University of Kansas;
Paul Kobulnicky, Vice Chancellor for Information Services and University
Librarian, University of Connecticut;
Gary Strong, Director, Queens Public Library;
Frederick J. Friend, Director of Scholarly Communication, University
College, London.
A follow-up discussion on the conference is planned for the Chief
Collection Development Officers of Large Research Libraries Discussion
Group (Big Chiefs) meeting in San Antonio.
DIGITAL SOUTH ASIA LIBRARY (DSAL): CRL received funding from the Department
of Education Title VI Section 606 to provide electronic access to South
Asian resources. The grant of $540,000 over three years will produce
on-line information about contemporary and historical South Asia -including
full-text documents, statistical data, electronic images, cartographic
representations, and pedagogical resources for language instruction. It
will continue the work of the pilot project undertaken by the University of
Chicago and Columbia University. Information about DSAL and this specific

INTERNATIONAL COALITION ON NEWSPAPERS (ICON): The following have applied
for charter membership in ICON to-date:

Center for Research Libraries
National Library of Canada
University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana
New York State Library
OCLC, Inc.
Staff submitted a grant proposal to NEH on July 1, 1999 to fund the
creation of a foreign newspaper union list and to do some preservation
microfilming. A reply is expected this spring.
SEARCHABLE DATABASES: Staff are involved in final testing of a Science
Serials database of titles currently received by CRL. An announcement of
availability is expected shortly. The database is similar to other
databases available on CRL's website at http://wwwcrl.uchicago.edu .
PERSONNEL: Milton T. Wolf retired as Vice President for Collection Programs
as of December 1, 1999.
TECHNICAL SERVICES
CATALOG STATUS - CRLCATALOG has over 512,000 catalog records and 178,000
authority records. CRLCATALOG now includes over 3600 records for the
Pre-Kangzhan and Kangzhan Period Preservation Project and over 19,510
records for the SAMP early 20th-century Indian books project. Cataloging
funded by the NEH Foreign Newspaper Cataloging Grant was completed in
October, 1999. CRLCATALOG was made available over the web in July at
http://crlcatalog.uchicago.edu . Telnet access is still available.
ACCESS SERVICES
USE STATISTICS - CRL has processed over 21,000 requests in the first half
of FY1999/2000, with a 65% fill rate. 59% of all filled requests are for
loans with an average of 3.9 items per loan. Staff are currently testing
the patron-initiated requesting module with ORBIS.
OTHER NEWS:
COUNCIL OF VOTING MEMBERS: The next Council meeting is scheduled for
Friday, April 14, 2000 in Rosemont, IL.
NEW CRL MEMBER: Hanover College joined as an Associate Member as of
November, 1999.
PERSONNEL: Don Simpson retired as President of CRL on October 29, 1999.
Marjorie Bloss and Jim Green served as acting Co-Presidents until January
4, 2000 when Beverly Lynch began as interim President.
