Members of the Quantitative Measures for Collection Development Committee
of ALCTS are looking at the possibility of creating a central source of
information about ongoing research projects in collection development and
management. It can be very difficult, presently, for researchers to know
that other librarians might be working on a research question related to
their own. If there were a clearinghouse where librarian-researchers could
log basic information about their research-in-progress, interaction among
researchers would likely increase and the overall quality of research
improve.
Such a clearinghouse might be maintained on a website, or as a regular
feature in a printed journal, or both. It would encompass all facets of
collection management and development (not just "quantitative measures"),
and would provide information such as a brief description of the project,
contact information on the researcher(s), date the project was begun,
expected date of completion, and any plans for publication.
We are interested in knowing what readers of the list think of this idea,
and would especially like to hear from librarians who presently have
research-in-progress. Does the idea seem worth pursuing? How might the
entries be structured and what information should they contain? Where
should they be published/posted?
Please reply to me (rnardini_at_YBP.com) and I will summarize and post to the list.
Thank you very much.
