SCIENCE LIBRARIAN , ENGINEERING/COMPUTER SCIENCES

Position Summary:   Syracuse University Library is seeking an
innovative and technologically capable science librarian with a strong
service orientation.  The position reports to the head, Science and
Technology Libraries. The successful candidate will join a
multi-disciplinary team of science librarians at a time the Library is
working on a major initiative to redefine library services and develop
new programs and services; plans for the re-visioning of science and
technology and other library services and facilities are underway.
Science and Technology Libraries staff include six librarians, a
supervisor, and eight support staff in the Carnegie Building and
Mathematics, Geology, and Physics branches. The SU Library, with
collections of nearly three million volumes, is actively pursuing
electronic and digital initiatives.  The position description is

Responsibilities:
· Provides a full range of reference, consultative, and user education
 services to students and faculty in the sciences (print, electronic,
web, digital, multimedia resources)

· Builds and manages electronic and print undergraduate and research
collections for engineering and computer science, serving departments
of electrical, computer, mechanical, aerospace, civil, environmental,
and chemical engineering, bioengineering, neuroscience, and affiliated
research centers, including the CASE Center (computer and software
engineering), Institute for Sensory Research, and Keck Center for
Molecular Electronics

· Serves as liaison to science faculty with an emphasis on
engineering, computer sciences, and other assigned disciplines

· Participates in departmental, library, and university initiatives in
the sciences, including planning for services, facilities, electronic
resources, digital, and other technologies 

· Supervises support staff

Qualifications:
Required:  Advanced degree from an ALA-accredited institution and at
least  two years experience as a librarian in an academic library or
research setting (preferably public services); academic background or
equivalent experience in engineering, physical sciences, or related
field

Candidates with all required qualifications and the strongest
combination of the following skills and attributes will receive
highest consideration: 

· Thorough knowledge of scientific research methods and familiarity
with trends in the information/ knowledge environment in engineering
and the sciences

· Collection development/management experience and a firm grasp of
science collection issues

· Exceptional computer-based skills, interests or training in digital
initiatives, and the ability to plan innovative services emphasizing
electronic resources for a research-oriented clientele

· The ability to work effectively in a collegial, multi-disciplinary
team environment to explore and promote the application of new
technologies

· An interest in providing excellent public service to students,
faculty, and researchers

· Evidence of strong  oral and written communication, interpersonal,
and organizational skills

· Commitment to ongoing professional growth and development

· Commitment to principles of diversity 


Environment:  Founded in 1870, Syracuse University is an independent
Research II University and a member of the Association of American

enroll over 12,000 undergraduate and 5,600 graduate and law students.

Salary and Benefits:  Commensurate with education and experience. 
Minimum:  $36,000.  The University provides a generous benefits
package, including TIAA/CREF (11% University contribution), health and
